This portrait of the artist as a boy in the workplace of his father, Joseph Wayne Reed, Sr. was made from a photograph of him at work as a linotype operator at the St. Petersburg Times. The artist did not appear in the original photograph, but placed himself in the painting as a gift for his elder son.
